Deadline is reporting that British actress Melanie Liburd has joined the cast of HBO’s Game Of Thrones as a character they refer to only as The Red Priestess.
Don’t panic – chances are it’s not the Red Priestess, Melisandre (Carice Van Houten), though the site does seem to think that is a possibility. They reckon this could “indicate a new direction for the character, or at the very least a new incarnation,” but it’s much more likely that Liburd is simply playing another worshiper of the Lord Of Light and Van Houten will still return.
After all, some time ago, leaked season 6 scene details made their way online, and one of the exchanges outlined featured Tyrion and Varys meeting a “Red Woman” and discussing the situation in Mereen. There’s a pretty good chance that’ll turn out to be our second Red Priestess. Then again though, nothing is certain at this point and only time will tell.
As for Liburd, she’s an up-and-coming talent who has appeared in the likes of The Grinder, Strike Back, Dracula and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She also has a role in the still untitled Kevin Williamson psychological thriller alongside Dylan McDermott. Joining HBO’s hit fantasy series will no doubt give her career a strong boost, and we look forward to seeing her when Game of Thrones returns next year.
