Captain Marvel Co-Writer Explains How They’re Approaching The Character

While Marvel Studios has beaten Waner Bros. to pretty much everything when it comes to superhero movies, they'll be a little behind them when it comes to launching a female-led franchise. That's because Wonder Woman is set to be released in 2017, with Captain Marvel not coming out until 2019.

While Marvel Studios has beaten Waner Bros. to pretty much everything when it comes to superhero movies, they’ll be a little behind them when it comes to launching a female-led franchise. That’s because Wonder Woman is set to be released in 2017, with Captain Marvel not coming out until 2019.

For years, fans have been campaigning for a Black Widow movie, but that doesn’t look set to happen any time soon, leaving the pressure entirely on the shoulders of fan-favourite character Carol Danvers. Of course, it’s really on the movie’s co-writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (The Good Dinosaur) to deliver, and the latter had this to say in a recent interview about their approach to a strong female superhero:

“Yeah, we haven’t started yet! We have not started yet. We just got the phone call to come over to Marvel. But for me personally, the wonderful thing about her and the challenge of her is going to be that she’s a female superhero. And that is awesome because she’s so powerful, and how hard is that going to be because she’s so powerful? We don’t want the Superman curse. “What’s her vulnerability?” is what we have to figure out.”

It’s an interesting dilemma, especially as Captain Marvel is actually one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful characters. Her powers aside though, and it’s going to be interesting to see how both Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman handle their respective female leads.

As was revealed earlier today, the movie will be released on March 8th, 2019.
