It's still a little under two months away from being released, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already breaking some box office records.

When tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens went on sale yesterday evening, pretty much every website offering them immediately crashed. The demand has been huge, with screenings selling out in mere minutes and some fans being left unable to even nab any passes to see the highly anticipated release. It’s no wonder then that there’s already talk of this movie becoming the highest grossing of all-time, but it’s going to be at least a few more months until we see whether or not that is indeed the case.

Regardless, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already breaking records, with more than $6.5 million in domestic ticket sales on North America’s 390 IMAX screens. That means this latest Star Wars movie has shattered the pre-sale IMAX record by a very long way, a strong start considering the fact that it’s still two months away from being released.

Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment, had this to say in a statement released today:

“The only words to describe the first day of IMAX worldwide advance ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are ‘record-shattering.’ We’re seeing sell-outs across the board – from Hollywood to London, to Sparks, Nevada, and everywhere in between. The fan reaction to the latest trailer and demand for this film in IMAX is unprecedented and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this phenomenon and share it with our partners at Disney, Lucasfilm, J.J. Abrams and the entire filmmaking team.”

Fandango and MovieTickets.com are also reporting record breaking sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with the movie reportedly selling eight times the amount of tickets that the first Hunger Games did (that was the previous record holder). As expected then, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to be huge.

Enjoy that record while you still can, Avatar
