Continuing to trumpet the ongoing production of Justin Kurzel’s Assassin’s Creed movie, Ubisoft Motion Pictures and DMC Film have unveiled the latest set photo from the video game adaptation, showcasing a brooding Michael Fassbender in a present day setting.

Much like the first image to emerge from production a fortnight ago, today’s still is really rather ambiguous, though we assume that Fassbender’s character (Callum Lynch) is exploring his modern-day surroundings and, specifically, Abstergo Industries or a building that houses the Animus technology. Look closely and you’ll be able to spy scar marks on the back of the actor’s neck, indicating that he’s been subject to some form of scientific testing.

Hopping from one time period to the next in true Assassin’s Creed fashion, it’s understood that Kurzel’s much-anticipated feature film will have Fassbender’s protagonist discover that he is, in fact, a descendant of the greatest collection of assassins to have ever stalked the earth. And so, by unlocking memory sequences, our hero is able to travel back to 15th century Spain for what is sure to be a treacherous and indeed clandestine adventure.

Completing the Macbeth reunion is French actress Marion Cotillard, though it’s unclear exactly who the Inception star will be playing come next December. Beyond that, Fassbender – acting as producer of the film – recently touched base with his desire to mould a bona fide franchise with Assassin’s Creed, emulating the IP’s genre-defining work in the video game space. Of course, such an idyllic future largely hinges on the success of Kurzel’s directorial effort, and we all know how poorly video game adaptations have performed in the past. Could this be the one to buck tradition?

With Brendan Gleeson and Dawn of Justice star Jeremy Irons rounding out the cast, Assassin’s Creed will dive into theaters on December 21, 2016.

Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.
