Kevin Feige recently confirmed that we won’t be getting any Captain Marvel casting news this year, and that frustratingly means we have even longer to wait before we find out who is going to take on the role of Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, someone else to have no thrown their name into the hat is House and TRON: Legacy star Olivia Wilde.
After initially expressing an interest in taking on the role of Captain Marvel during a conversation with a fan on Twitter last week, Wilde followed up on that in a recent interview by further expressing her interest in the genre:
“I’m a big fan of superhero films, and I have so much respect for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The thing with female superheroes is that, in order to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-ass power lacks a certain nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity.”
After acknowledging that characters like Black Widow and Gamora have gone some way in achieving that, the actress went on to explain what she thinks needs to be done in order to improve female roles in these adaptations:
“Marvel has been so smart about casting unexpected people for these roles. Look at what Robert Downey brought to Iron Man. A real, dry sense of humor and a complexity to his hero balance. I think that the way these Marvel heroes are written, the female superheroes included, do have complexity and flaws. But I think when they are translated into film, the women can become these ultimate goddesses of perfection and I would love to create a female Marvel character who is just as unexpected and complex as some of the male characters as Iron Man. I think that would be really cool!”
It’s impossible to disagree with anything Wilde is saying here, and she would actually make for a great Captain Marvel if given the chance. After the tepid response to both TRON: Legacy and Cowboys & Aliens, Wilde seemed to shy away from any more blockbuster roles, but it’s an area in which the talented actress would no doubt excel if given the proper chance to do so.
