David Ayer’s Suicide Squad may be occupying headlines left, right and center thanks to Empire’s recent coverage, though just as one standalone film eases into post-production, director Patty Jenkins is primed to take the reins of the Wonder Woman movie ahead of principal photography starting next month, and star Chris Pine recently provided an update on the origins tale.
Set to play Steve Trevor in Warner’s much-anticipated superhero flick, Pine’s character will act as a love interest to our famed Amazon Warrior, after losing control of his fighter jet while sailing over Paradise Island (AKA Themyscira) during the throes of World War II. And though his place was all but confirmed up until this point, the Star Trek Into Darkness actor has finally confirmed his place in Wonder Woman to Premiere (via Heroic Hollywood).
What’s interesting is that Patty Jenkins is primed to shoot on film – joining fellow DC property Suicide Squad in the category – and it could be that WB is taking strides to ensure that the majority of DC Expanded Universe omits digital and stays true to film. Then again, Zack Snyder shot vast chunks of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice using digital, so it’s likely being judged on a case-by-case basis.
In terms of Wonder Woman, Pine expressed his excitement ahead of collaborating with both Jenkins and Gal Gadot, who is set to pick up the famous guise as Diana Prince. There’s no mention of the rumored three-act, time-hopping structure of the film here, but it seems a given bearing in mind that the director’s feature has to tie into the modern-day setting of Dawn of Justice and, perhaps most important of all, Justice League.
“I do not really know what I’m allowed to tell you. I’m super excited, of course, Gal Gadot is super talented, Patty Jenkins will perform, and we will shoot in film … What excites me most is to turn in a movie with a superhero woman. With a woman in the lead role. I team with this intelligent, beautiful and strong [woman] to destroy the wicked and save humanity.”
Wonder Woman will chart the origins of Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince when Jenkins’ standalone piece opens on June 23, 2017.
