Martin Garrix’s First Post-Spinnin’ Release Sounds Nothing Like You’d Expect

After a bitter and well-publicized split with Dutch EDM label Spinnin' Records, Martin Garrix has ended a relative lull in releases with a track available for free download titled "Poison." I've been writing all year that I was anxious to see Garrix arrive at a more mature sound as a result of his musical identity crisis, and this track is the most sincere piece of music he's put out to date.

After a bitter and well-publicized split with Dutch EDM label Spinnin’ Records, Martin Garrix has ended a relative lull in releases with a new track titled “Poison” that’s available for free download. I’ve been writing all year that I was anxious to see Garrix arrive at a more mature sound as a result of his musical identity crisis, and this song is the most sincere piece of music he’s put out to date.

An introspective progressive house track driven by a simple yet poignant synth melody, “Poison” hints at the elusive magic that artists like Eric Prydz and deadmau5 capture in their productions. While percussive elements in the buildup and compressed “Pryda” snares at the drop give it enough main stage flair to send ripples through a thousands-deep festival crowd, the driving repetition of the chord progression gives it an intelligent groove that’s been missing from his other 2015 releases.

It may be too early to declare that a new and improved Martin Garrix has arrived, but perhaps his parting with Spinnin’ has afforded him the opportunity to express himself as a contemporary EDM artist in new and exciting ways.
