As the director that crafted a kinetic and deeply ambitious black comedy in Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance), it’s no wonder that Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant has muscled its way into this year’s awards season with its raw tale of betrayal, survival, and the all-consuming feeling of revenge.

In fact, such is the film’s intense nature that Mad Max: Fury Road actor Tom Hardy wrestled with the acclaimed, Oscar-winning filmmaker in order to relieve tension on what proved to be one of the most gruelling shoots of this generation – no thanks to Iñárritu’s seemingly unyielding commitment to realism.

It’s an approach that’s already beginning to pay dividends, however, with any piece of marketing material underlining The Revenant‘s bubbling intensity, and today’s latest character posters are no different. Featuring Hardy alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, the one-sheets may adopt the ol’ superimposing trick that is fast-becoming a new favorite among Hollywood studios, but there’s no question that the pictures help reaffirm the film’s tone in one fell swoop.

The Revenant will open in limited release on Christmas Day.

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. THE REVENANT is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award® winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel).
