At the time of writing, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange is almost a year from release, and with Marvel’s fantastical standalone film fast-approaching its due date, The Hollywood Reporter has word that Michael Stuhlbarg is on the verge of joining the cast in an unspecified role.

Best known for playing a ruthless crime boss in HBO’s acclaimed bootlegging drama Boardwalk Empire and, more recently, as the engineer Andy Hertzfeld in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs drama, today’s casting tidbit could mean that Stuhlbarg is headed for Marvel’s quantic realm, where he’ll star opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen and The Martian‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Beyond his role in Empire, Stuhlbarg also appeared in A Serious Man all the while dabbling in all things alien with Men in Black 3. However, today’s announcement will mark the actor’s first foray into the realm of comic book movies, and he’s arguably been selected for one of the more intriguing releases crowding up Marvel’s cinematic slate.

Set to venture further into the supernatural side of things than any installment in the MCU to date, Doctor Strange revolves around Cumberbatch’s brilliant scientist Stephen Vincent Strange, who stumbles upon a potent magical source when attempting to medically cure the loss of control in his hands. It’s here that Cumberbatch’s lead will evolve into the Sorcerer Supreme we know, love and slightly fear, and over the past few weeks we’ve been hearing some interesting reports regarding McAdams’ piece of the supernatural puzzle.

Scott Derrickson will whisk moviegoers into the quantic realm when Doctor Strange arrives in theaters on November 4, 2016. Production is set to get underway later this month.
