Doctor Strange is now shooting in Nepal, with Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch recently spotted on set rocking a beard as Stephen Strange in scenes which clearly take place shortly after the accident which injures his hands.

Despite these photos showing up all over social media, an official synopsis has yet to be revealed by Marvel Studios, but we do thankfully have some new story details courtesy of Latino-Review.

Doctor Strange apparently kicks off much earlier than expected, in 1968 in Kathmandu. It’s there that we see some “Zealots of dark magic” opening a portal to a dark dimension, and their leader is Kaecilius, a character named after an associate of Baron Mordo from the comic books. Things then jump to the present day in New York as Strange performs an operation on a patient suffering from a gunshot wound.

As arrogant as his comic book counterpart, Strange crashes his car while talking on the phone and severely damages his hands. Despite several surgeries from Dr. Nicodemus West, his hands simply aren’t able to be repaired to the extent that he can once again become a surgeon. Apparently, it’s, “an encounter with magic (and sub-atomic particles) leads him on a journey to find the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), and when he finds her, she initially refuses to teach him.”

So, that all sounds pretty much identical to the Doctor Strange comic books, though that scene set in the late ’60s is very intriguing…it has to have something to do with Dormammu, right?

Oh, and don’t worry, the site adds that the character will be cutting off that beard and sporting his classic facial hair shortly after meeting The Ancient One.
