[Updated] Mariah Carey Reportedly Cast As Commissioner Gordon In The Lego Batman Movie

In what has to be one of the most interesting pieces of casting news this reporter has seen in recent memory, singer/ actress Mariah Carey (Glitter) is reportedly in talks to voice Commissioner Jim Gordon in The Lego Batman Movie. Now that you have checked your calendar to make sure today is not April 1st, you can come to the realization that she is now in the company of actors such as Pat Hingle, Gary Oldman, and Ben McKenzie, all of which have inhabited the role of one of Batman's most trusted allies and confidants.

Update: Contrary to previous reports, singer-songstress Mariah Carey will join The Lego Batman Movie as Gotham’s mayor, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Original story: In what has to be one of the most interesting pieces of casting news this reporter has seen in recent memory, singer/actress Mariah Carey (Glitter) is reportedly in talks to voice Commissioner Jim Gordon in The Lego Batman Movie. Now that you have checked your calendar to make sure today is not April 1st, you can come to the realization that she is now in the company of actors such as Pat Hingle, Gary Oldman, and Ben McKenzie, all of which have inhabited the role of one of Batman’s most trusted allies and confidants.

First appearing in the very first Batman story ever published, “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate” in Detective Comics #27 (1939), Commissioner Jim Gordon has since been an important part of stories featuring The Dark Knight across all forms of media. Be it comic books, movies, animated series, or video games, Gotham City’s top cop is a stalwart in every sense of the word.

Seeing as how this is a spinoff of The Lego Movie, it’s highly possible that it will feature one or several musical numbers. Perhaps that is why Carey has been tapped for the role. I can only image that Jim Gordon will belt out some high notes thanks to being voiced by one of the most hallowed divas of the past few decades, only to receive bewildered looks from Batman and whomever else may be present.

Carey will join a cast that already consists of Will Arnett (Batman/ Bruce Wayne), Ralph Fiennes (Alfred Pennyworth), Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl) and Zach Galifianakis (The Joker). The film will be directed by Chris McKay, with a screenplay penned by Seth Grahame-Smith. If the screenwriter sounds familiar to you, he should, because he’ll also write and direct The Flash, which will speed its way into theaters March 23, 2018.

The Lego Batman Movie, meanwhile, arrives in theaters February 10, 2017.
