Entertainment Weekly’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens coverage continues with a few interesting new details on the returning Leia, who’ll once again be played by Carrie Fisher.
A lot of fans assumed the most prominent female character in the original trilogy would have ascended to the position of Queen by now, but from the sounds of things, the Leia we catch up with in The Force Awakens doesn’t have time for such pomp and ceremony – she simply goes by general now.
Director J.J. Abrams says Leia’s is one of the “heavier” arcs in the movie, and actually suggests the character will have become somewhat jaded and serious. From the looks of things, Han Solo hasn’t been around for a while, so perhaps their reunion will reignite some old feelings and give us a glimpse of the old Leia? Surely he’s the one character that can still get away with calling her princess, right?
She’s referred to as General, but … there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her ‘Princess. The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there’s not much goofing around where Leia’s concerned. But it felt historic to have her, especially with Harrison, back in scenes together. I can only imagine the baggage that they bring to it, I’m just a fan who loves this stuff, but they’ve been living with it — and living in it — since ’77.
Then again, there’s also a good chance that it’s Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron, who is expected to serve as Leia’s right-hand-man in the film. Regardless, all will be revealed when Star Wars: The Force Awakens blasts into theaters on December 18 – but it’s definitely going to difficult not to refer to this character as ‘Princess’ going forward.
