Activision has formally announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops III has become the “biggest entertainment launch of 2015,” after Treyarch’s blockbuster sequel stormed to $550 million in worldwide sales during its opening weekend. These numbers are based on sell-through estimates.

Beyond that, the publisher noted that Black Ops III‘s launch is now bigger than any other video game, book, film or piece of music for the year, and the latest installment in the shooter series also proved popular with the Twitch audience, becoming the most streamed/viewed title of 2015.

Perhaps most important of all to the Call of Duty franchise, however, is the fact that Black Ops III witnessed an uptake in sales figures for the series, with Activision noting that launch numbers were “significantly” higher than both Advanced Warfare and 2013’s Ghosts.

Call of Duty’s millions of passionate fans have shown us, yet again, the strength of their commitment to this enduring franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops III is the biggest entertainment launch this year in any medium, and bigger than any theatrical opening weekend ever. As we‘ve said from the start, PlayStation is the best place to play Call of Duty, and this record-breaking launch shows how true this statement is. Black Ops III is the biggest launch of the year so far, and the PlayStation Nation is ready. We’re proud to call PlayStation the home of Call of Duty and look forward to supporting our community with DLC map pack content first.

Elsewhere in the record-breaking news, Call of Duty: Black Ops III will go down as GameStop’s biggest launch of 2015, while over on Sony’s platforms – which witnessed a boon in sales courtesy of the recent content partnership – Treyarch’s futuristic shooter quickly became the best-selling digital game on the PlayStation Network.
