We have yet to see several of the new characters that’ll be introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but we have got a tiny glimpse at the alien pirate that’ll be brought to life via motion capture by Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.

In an interview with J.J. Abrams, the director confirms that it is indeed Maz that can be spotted on the official poster, and she’s also narrating parts of the final trailer and that recent TV spot. He also provides a few hints as to what we can expect from this diminutive creature.

I had some specific ideas about how she would work and what she would do. I had this pitch about these goggles that she wore. Her eyes are an important aspect of her character, and you’ll see how it plays out. Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time. She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.

It would seem Maz is being positioned as the wise old sage-type character, who will act as a guide and adviser to our new young hero – not unlike a certain other little green alien from the previous movies. Abrams wouldn’t reveal anything about her species or homeworld, but he does promise all of that info. will be available through certain “other venues” soon enough.

Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver,  Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to be released on December 18th, 2015.
