While the maiden poster for Adam McKay’s The Big Short showcased the tumbling housing market that the drama will depict, today’s brand new one-sheet sheds light on the stars behind the numbers.
It arrives in tandem with a new featurette for the picture, welcoming leading players such as Steve Carell, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling in front of the camera to discuss the finer details of The Big Short and how it represents a creative departure for McKay as a director. Indeed, it does – up until now, McKay has carved out a financially-sound niche in the comedy genre, what with hits such as Anchorman, Talladega Nights and the irreverent Step Brothers. But if there was ever any doubt that the director is out of his depth with The Big Short, today’s featurette ought to put any lingering doubt to bed.
In adapting Michael Lewis’ titular novel – the scribe behind such awards-friendly pieces as Moneyball and The Blind Side – McKay is mining material that is rich in dramatic potential. Charting the fall of the housing market circa 2008, the story orbits around four cunning analysts who exposed a legal loophole in order to make a quick buck, though their morals are soon put to the sword when the chips come down.
Tracy Letts, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Byron Mann, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong and Finn Wittrock complete the cast. The Big Short will shoot for Oscar glory when Adam McKay’s drama opens in theaters on December 23rd.
