Sony Pictures’ The Rosie Project may have lost Richard Linklater only a few weeks ago – not to mention Jennifer Lawrence, too – but that hasn’t quelled the director’s appetite to get back behind the camera. He’s currently dreaming up his follow-up to critically-acclaimed indie drama Boyhood, and after settling on an adaptation of Maria Semple’s 2012 novel Where’d You Go, Bernadette, we now have word of the project’s first potential star.
Word comes by way of The Wrap, revealing that Cate Blanchett is in contention for a lead role. The exact specifics of said part hasn’t been disclosed at the time of going to press, though it’s a safe bet that a star of Blanchett’s calibre would be in line to assume the title part.
What we do know, however, is that Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber are on board to adapt Semple’s novel to the silver screen. Honing their past experience on The Fault In Our Stars and Paper Towns, the pair will pen the screenplay for Where’d You Go, Bernadette, following the heart-wrenching story of an agoraphobic architect who vanishes on the eve of a family trip to Antarctica, raising nine kinds of questions as to her exact location. Should Linklater’s rendition of the story hue closely to the book, then the plot will be channeled through her teenage daughter, recounting her wayward mother’s adventure through a mixture of messages, emails and heartfelt letters.
After earning critical adulation for her role in Carol, along with starring in this year’s Oscar dark horse Truth, Blanchett has filled up her slate with a slew of eye-catching productions, and at least based on premise alone, Linklater’s latest has the potential to be a crowd-pleaser when it eventually opens.
Megan Ellison, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are all attached to produce Where’d You Go, Bernadette, though there’s no mention of a production start date as of yet.
