While the initial reception to the appearance of Oscar Isaac’s rendition of the titular, ancient villain in X-Men: Apocalypse was lukewarm at best – he was even compared to Ivan Ooze from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie of ’95 – co-star Nicholas Hoult has offered new details about Isaac’s “badass” take on the deity.
Due for release in 2016, Bryan Singer’s feature will have Apocalypse rise up from a 4,000 year slumber to wreak biblical destruction on mankind and mutantkind alike, and Hoult has touched base with the intensity and gravitas that The Force Awakens alum is bringing to the role.
[zerg]Speaking to IGN, the Mad Max: Fury Road star was full of praises for this co-star, laying out the foundations of X-Men: Apocalypse, how it builds upon the success of Days of Future Past, and the 80s setting.
“First Class was the first time we went back in time with the younger cast” he explained. “Days of Future Past dealt with time displacement and all that sort of thing, and blended casts. And this one I think is just going to be pretty huge in many ways. It’s set in the ‘80s. Introducing younger versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey and Storm and those characters so you get a bit of a back story to those guys. And then Apocalypse – Oscar Isaac – turns up and is a basdass and it all goes quite extreme.”
Reprising his role as Beast for the blockbuster sequel, the actor then went on to admit that he doesn’t share much screentime with the film’s title big bad, though he did tease at the dynamic of Apocalypse as a character, including why he’s seeking destruction in the first place.
“To be honest with you, the times we were acting in the same scene were often quite distant. So I could sense the presence of him – and he’s certainly got a lot of presence, in life – he’s a really fun guy to be around. And that character’s a tricky one to play, you know, essentially a mutant from an era long ago, awoken in this modern day, very confused about what’s been going on around him and decides to do something about it. He certainly brings an intensity to it, in a great way.”
