Exactly ten years ago, Bruce Willis toplined Florent Emilio Siri’s low-key action thrill ride Hostage, playing a high-skilled LAPD agent who helped parlay a tense situation that witnessed a group of deadly terrorists infiltrate a family home. A decade on and Willis is now on the other end of the negotiations, with today’s first trailer for Extraction revealing the actor as a CIA agent who’s been kidnapped after the agency leaves him high and dry.

And so, it’s a clandestine act that sees his son, played by Kellan Lutz, spring into action in order to save him from the terrorist group. Directed by Steven C. Miller, the official logline for the by the numbers thriller is as follows: “A former CIA operative is kidnapped by a group of terrorist. When his son learns there is no plan for his father to be saved, he launches his own rescue operation.”

Hardly very original, of course, though there is still some reason to be hopeful for Extraction. After ducking under the CIA’s proverbial radar, Lutz’s protagonist comes face-to-face with Gina Carano’s steely field agent, Victoria. No stranger to the physical side of acting, the former MMA star has built up a catalog of action performances, with Haywire rising to the top as one of the very best. Going off of today’s trailer, though, Miller’s drama will struggle to stand alongside Carano’s breakout hit. Dan Bilzerian, Lydia Hull and Tyler Olson also star, while Umair Aleem and Max Adams will take up script duties.

December 18 is the current release date for Extraction, with the film opening opposite both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s sibling drama Sisters. It’ll also be available via VOD, though we can’t imagine Lionsgate’s thriller will find much of an audience during such a crammed corridor.
