Tom Holland On Spider-Man Being The Only MCU Hero With A Secret Identity

Notable by his absence in the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War was Spider-Man, but rest assured, he will be in the movie! It's still not clear just how significant a role he's going to have of course, but rumours point to him somehow getting involved with the conflict. However, as the Sokovia Accords have nothing to do with secret identities, his story arc is going to play out a lot differently than it does in the comic book.

Notable by his absence in the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War was Spider-Man, but rest assured, he will be in the movie! It’s still not clear just how significant a role he’s going to have of course, but rumours point to him somehow getting involved with the conflict. However, as the Sokovia Accords have nothing to do with secret identities, his story arc is going to play out a lot differently than it does in the comic book.

In a recent interview to promote the release of In the Heart of the Sea, Tom Holland weighed in on the interesting role Spider-Man looks set to have in Captain America: Civil War, confirming the fact that him being behind a mask is going to definitely lead to a very unique dynamic when he presumably ends up meeting The Avengers:

“I think one of the most interesting things about Peter Parker for us is that he’s the only person in the MCU now that has a secret identity, so we all know who everyone else is. I think it’s quite interesting to go back to that hiding behind a mask.”

That’s a pretty interesting point, and seeing as Spider-Man has always kept his secret identity under wraps, we’re curious to see whether he ends up confiding in any of the heroes he meets next year.

The actor then went on to talk about what it’s been like to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe at such a late point, revealing in the process that unlike the previous Spider-Man movies, no filming will be taking place in Los Angeles. Furthermore, he mentioned that Marvel is only going to be making a very brief stop in New York (which is, of course, the home of Peter Parker) for the character’s 2017 reboot.

“They’re lovely people and Robert did my first screen test and he was so welcoming. He took me aside and gave me a little advice about the audition. Like with Ron (Howard), I just felt at ease with him, ‘cause he’s just a down to earth easy-going guy, and I can’t wait to get to work with them more. I’m really excited to get to work and be a part of that universe. We’re shooting in Atlanta for most of it, because they have studios there and I think it’s cheaper to build a New York set than it is to shoot here, because it’s going to be very expensive. We probably will end up here (in New York) for one week or two.”

While it may seem like a shame for Spider-Man not to be based primarily in New York, if James Gunn can turn London into the far reaches of space as he did in Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel should have no problem recreating New York in Atlanta. Plus, the fact that the production is heading there briefly at least means we’ll get a handful of authentic New York set scenes, so there’s really nothing to worry about.

Regardless, Holland is so far saying all the right things, so seeing his take on Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War next year promises to be one of the most exciting parts of an already incredible looking movie.
