Andrew Garfield was unceremoniously dropped from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise when Sony scrapped plans for two more instalments and a Sinister Six spinoff that the British actor was also set to star in. Now, it’s up to In the Heart of the Sea star Tom Holland to carry the mantle and give fans the version of Spider-Man they’ve always wanted to see. Needless to say, the youngster is no doubt feeling the pressure, and had this to say recently about how it feels to be following in the footsteps of Garfield.

“I haven’t [met him], but I’m a huge fan of Andrew and he’s said some lovely things about me in the press the other day. He did such a good job as Peter Parker and it’s really difficult not to copy him because what he did was so perfect and obviously there are going to be things that I might steal but I hope we get to meet and even work together in the future.”

It’s clear to see from comments like this that the new Spider-Man is very humble, and his comments about Garfield (someone that many fans loved in the role) are sure to go down well. With his role in Captain America: Civil War now shot, Holland is obviously going to have to start preparing to play Spider-Man again in the Jon Watts helmed 2017 reboot, and his training regime sounds pretty tough:

“I went to this gym yesterday where they strap electric belts on you and you do exercise whilst being electrocuted. It’s a really strange experience. It’s like a dull tingling but I’m definitely feeling it today. I have to do 20 minutes once a week. Marvel are quite against us doing our own stunts [though].”

Based on how Marvel has transformed actors like Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth in the past, it’s no surprise that they’re doing the same with Spider-Man. With no sign of the hero in the recently released trailer for Captain America: Civil War, it remains to be seen when we’ll get our first look at Holland as Peter Parker, but here’s hoping we don’t have too long to wait!
