Apparently Marvel Passed On A Doctor Strange Movie From Guillermo del Toro And Neil Gaiman

Of course, we know that Marvel currently has a movie based on the Sorcerer Supreme in production from director Scott Derrickson with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, but many years ago we could have gotten an adaptation of Doctor Strange from an absolute writer/director dream team: Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth).

It’s not news that the duo were interested in working on a big-screen outing for the mystical character, but it is a surprise that Marvel actually passed on their vision for Steven Strange, as evidenced from Gaiman’s Tweet below.

This would have been in the very early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so there’s a chance that del Toro and Gaiman’s idea may have been a bit too, well, strange for the studio at the time. Whatever the reason, it’s a real shame that nothing came of it – but there’s always the possibility of them teaming up to work on another cape-related project some day.
