It’s been a long time since Jack was seen strutting his stuff on the small screen – more than a decade, in fact – but today Adult Swim revealed that Genndy Tartakovsky über-stylish cartoon series Samurai Jack will return for a new season of hacking and slashing in 2016.

Setting up shop over at Cartoon Network Studios, it’s been confirmed that Tartakovsky will helm the new installment, which will be broadcast via Toonami at some point next year. No other details were disclosed beyond an all-too-brief teaser video along with a striking crimson poster – one which boasts an art style that will be instantly recognizable to fans of the original series.

Blending sci-fi elements with Japanese culture, Samurai Jack would go on to become a cult favorite throughout its shortened run. Birthed in 2001, the series ran for four seasons and 52 episodes during its original run, though it was eventually cancelled in 2004. Indeed, the brand lived on through comic spinoffs and the like, though with Tartakovsky poised to take the reins once again, fans can look forward to a sense of closure to Jack’s time-hopping adventures.

In the time that’s lapsed between 2001 and now, Tartakovsky has kept busy on numerous different projects, with the animation director lending a hand to fellow Cartoon Network series Dexter’s Laboratory and the ever-popular Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Samurai Jack represents an opportunity for the artist to circle back to his roots, then, and even from today’s teaser alone, we’re already relishing the thought of Jack making a break for the small screen once again in 2016.
