With Andrew Garfield rather unceremoniously dumped from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise when Sony decided to team up with Marvel for a reboot, the hunt for the new Peter Parker kept comic book fans on the edge of their seats.
After almost countless rumours and shortlists, it was finally revealed that Tom Holland (In the Heart of the Sea) had been chosen by Marvel, with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal reportedly instrumental in the decision. However, based on comments from Joe and Anthony Russo, it sounds like they too were instrumental in choosing the youngster to take on the role of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and beyond.
“We did two screen tests with the character. We were pretty vocal about who we wanted for the part. He’s fantastic. Amazing. It’s like Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun. Rarely do you see a kid carry a movie like that.”
The movie Joe is referring there is 2012 tsunami drama The Impossible, and he then went on to further explain why they gravitated toward Holland during the casting process.
“He’s also a dancer and a gymnast. He fits the part like you can’t believe. Another thing that we were really pushing for was to go young with the part. It’s the only way to differentiate it from what’s been done in the past. Get him as close as you can to the age that [the actor] is.”
As great as this is to hear, it would be nice to actually see Holland as Spider-Man. Opinions are split on whether Marvel are going to show him off in marketing materials or whether they’ll keep him under wraps until the last minute as they did with The Vision. As great as it would be to see him kept as a surprise, there’s no way Marvel won’t promote the fact they have Spider-Man in the MCU, so hopefully we’ll see something sooner rather than later.
