Ever the one to set a proverbial finish line for himself, The Hateful Eight director Quentin Tarantino has reminded us once more that he plans to call time on his career behind the camera after his tenth feature film – meaning there’s seemingly only two movies left to come from the beloved filmmaker.

Fresh from being quizzed once again about the status of long-rumored sequel Kill Bill 3, Tarantino appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show to promote The Hateful Eight – incidentally his eighth feature – and touched base on maintaining a near-perfect directorial record. For him, the ability to set an arbitrary end goal means that those two fabled projects that will inevitably succeed The Hateful Eight will have the director firing on all cylinders, as he looks to bring the curtain down with a flourish rather than a whimper.

“If I only think that I only have two movies, well, that keeps it at the tip of the spear, if you know what I mean,” he said. “That means those ones better be good and I better mean everything about them.”

It’s by no means the first time that Tarantino has entertained the idea of entering an early retirement after his tenth movie – in his eyes, he’d rather leave the audience wanting more as opposed to overstaying his welcome. This then raises the fascinating question as to what those two aforementioned films will be. Tarantino has teased in the past about his longstanding desire to helm a sci-fi feature, while the director has also pitched plans to adapt Elmore Leonard’s novel Forty Lashes Less One into a TV miniseries. Could that still leave room for Kill Bill 3?

Quentin Tarantino‘s latest, The Hateful Eight is set to premiere in select theaters via the 70MM format on Christmas Day, before it broadens its reach to include standard theaters on January 8, 2016.
