By this stage in the game, even after the damaging effect of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, everyone involved appears keen to jump-start Indiana Jones 5 – just as soon as The Force Awakens launches into theaters, that is.
Steven Spielberg is game to return, while Harrison Ford – considered to be irreplaceable as the famed archeologist – continues to fly the flag for setting the wheels in motion. Now, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has weighed in on the matter at hand.
Though Kennedy acknowledged that Star Wars is very much taking precedent at both Lucasfilm and Disney, the executive revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that everyone involved is ready for another crack at the whip with Indiana Jones 5, even going so far as to say that “a couple of story ideas” have been banded about in preparation.
We’re all trying to figure out when the right time is to step back in. Harrison really wants to do it; Steven really wants to do it. We’ve kicked around a couple of story ideas, but beyond that, I don’t know yet. I think there will be one, we’ll certainly move forward with Indy. But right now, everybody’s just focused on Star Wars.
While it’s not a conclusive green light, when it comes to the chances of seeing Harrison Ford as Indy once more, Kennedy appears confident. Besides, now that Spielberg has effectively ruled out the possibility of recasting Ford in the title role for the foreseeable future – sorry, Chris Pratt – it seems that it’s a question of when, rather than if, we’ll see Ford reprise the iconic role in the next two-to-three years.
But can Indiana Jones 5 possibly herald a comeback for the series in the wake of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
