If the film’s first awe-inspiring trailer wasn’t enough to drive home the point that the arrival of Oscar Isaac’s title deity heralds global destruction, then the official new poster for X-Men: Apocalypse ought to seal the deal.

Placing Isaac’s glowering Apocalypse front and center, crumbling human (or mutant?) skull in hand, it’s an evocative one-sheet that truly sets the tone for Bryan Singer’s biblical threequel.

As today’s footage revealed, the towering and all-powerful villain will emerge from Egypt, ready to rain down a wave of terror and destruction that wouldn’t look out of place in the Old Testament. Through his ancient eyes, the modern population of mutants are lost, lead astray by blind leaders – James McAvoy’s Professor X is a particular target – that need to be wiped from existence if the planet is to be reborn as Apocalypse sees fit.

To do so, Isaac’s unhinged titan has recruited a quartet known as the Four Horsemen. Bestowing Alexandra Shipp’s Storm, Psylocke, Angel and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto with mind-bending abilities, the core ploy appears to be to turn the mutants against one another or, at the very least, tear them apart from the inside.

Set for an arrival on May 27, 2016, X-Men: Apocalypse will feature Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Lucas Till as Havok, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Oscar Isaac as the title big bad.

Apocalypse

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”
