Sony’s Scott Rohde has spoken today about the company’s commitment to producing high quality free-to-play games, such as Guns Up!, which was released for the PS4 earlier this month. Free-to-play games have been subject to some contentious scrutiny in recent years as “free” regularly becomes “freemium,” but Rohde wants Sony to banish such notions.

Talking to Kinda Funny Games, Rohde spoke about his determination for Sony’s free-to-play games to be exciting and worthwhile, making players feel “empowered” when they stick with them:

We are trying very, very hard to make a free-to-play game that makes you feel empowered as a gamer and not something that has gates. Not something where you say, ‘Oh my god, I could have played this game, but you’re just gating me.’ It’s not there. If you want to grind and play these games forever without spending a dollar, you can do it.

Sony’s Guns Up! is a military strategy game that’s available for the PS4 right now, while future titles in the free-to-play schedule include Kill Strain and Drawn To Death.
