Deck the halls and pour another glass of eggnog, this Christmas will herald a festive special from the writing crack team over at BBC in the form of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.
Thrusting Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) back to Victorian London, today brings forth a haunting new teaser for the standalone episode, hinting that the upcoming episode will be much more eerie than the Sherlock faithful have come to expect.
For a series that’s been defined for revolutionizing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed sleuth, dragging him and his partner-in-crime into a modern-day setting in the process, The Abominable Bride will situate its mystery in the year 1895, with Cumberbatch and Freeman sporting top hats and some questionable facial hair. Sherlock co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have, unsurprisingly, remained as ambiguous as ever in the build-up to the episode’s release, though today’s clip does at least offer a better look at the title and elusive supernatural entity in motion.
Perhaps what has us most excited about Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is the stellar production design. From the cobble streets to the billowing smoke that fills the frame, Gatiss, Moffat and Co. have embraced the period setting with arms wide open, and the result ought to be a chilling exercise in old-school detective work.
Get ready to return to 221b Baker Street when Sherlock: The Abominable Bride makes its debut on January 1, 2016.
