In the mood for some scares? Five Nights At Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon has just announced (no, not another game) a tie-in book. Due for release on December 22, Cawthon says that Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Untold Story isn’t just a hobby he took up in his spare time – it’s something he’s been working and planning on releasing for the last “ten months.”
In a post on the Steam forums, Cawthon said:
This is not something recent; I’ve been working alongside a professional writer for the last ten months crafting this story. I’m very excited about the finished product. It expands the mythos and reveals a human element never before seen in the games.
If you’re unfamiliar with the indie horror series, Five Nights At Freddy’s sticks you in an inescapable and very unsettling scenario. The first few games had you take on the role of a security guard for fast food joint Feddy Fazbear’s Pizza – a restaurant who’s animatronic inhabitants come to life and night and try kill you off, with your only means of defence being through using surveillance systems and security doors to keep the furry monsters at bay.
Subsequent games followed a similar format, but changed locations and introduced new gameplay elements. But despite the fact that Cawthon has released four games in the series over a short period of two years, he doesn’t seem to be tiring of his creation any time soon.
Cawthon hasn’t released any story details for the book, but judging by the title, it looks like we may finally get some crucial information that fills in the narrative gaps left by the games.
Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Untold Story will be released for the Amazon Kindle first, before being published in paper form at a later date.
