Well, it’s now official – Hideo Kojima’s contract with Konami has officially expired. What’s next for the legendary games designer, you ask? How about a new studio and a PlayStation 4 exclusive? Yeah, wouldn’t that be nice.
As luck would have it, that’s exactly what’s happened. Along with the formation of his own independent studio – Kojima Productions – the Metal Gear series creator’s first new project will be a PlayStation 4 console exclusive title, that will, Sony says, come to PC at a later date.
Of the new position, Kojima said that:
I will be taking on a new challenge by establishing my own independent studio, and I am thrilled to be able to embark on this journey with PlayStation, who I have continued to work with all these past years. I cannot wait to deliver, with PlayStation, a game that will become a compelling franchise.
Sadly, Kojima stopped short of actually saying what the game was called, would be about and what genre it would fall in, but we don’t imagine you’ll have to wait much longer for more details.
In the announcement video (watch it above), Sony President Andrew House appears rather giddy with excitement as he reveals the new partnership, saying that:
PlayStation’s history is one of game innovation and great new franchises. Hideo Kojima has been a huge part of that history, and we are therefore delighted that he has chosen to bring his brand new project to life in partnership with PlayStation. We look forward to working with him on an exciting new game and warmly welcome him to the PlayStation family.
Is this the most exciting news of the year? It quite possibly could be. Many had suspected that Kojima would be leaving Konami to form his own studio or join another after months of an alleged dispute between the two forces led to a falling-out, but this clearly makes it official.
