A prequel to the Homeworld series is set to be released in January 2016, when Gearbox Software delivers Homeworld: Deserts Of Kharak. The latest instalment to the popular RTS series was first confirmed for the developer back in 2013 but, with the release now just over a month away, the first announcement trailer is here to whet the appetite.

The prequel will see players take control of events before the expeditions of the original Homeworld games, as chief science officer Rachel S’jet and the Coalition of the Northern Kiithid send an expedition deep within enemy-controlled territory to investigate findings on Kharak, which could forever alter the fate of humanity.

The game’s release will be accompanied by a remastered edition of the original game, which is something that Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford is very proud of:

After more than a decade-long hiatus for Homeworld, it is an immense honour in the last year to launch two new entries in the Homeworld franchise: an incredible, critically acclaimed remastering of the original Homeworld games and now the all-new, ground-based, real-time-strategy game called Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.

According to the Steam Store, pre-orders of the brand new game will grant the purchaser a free copy of the remastered editions, whilst anyone pre-ordering the remaster will get a 20% discount for Homeworld: Deserts Of Kharak.

Both games will be available from January 20th 2016.
