In news that shouldn’t surprise anyone, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now taken the record for the biggest opening weekend of all-time, beating out Jurassic World‘s impressive $208.8 million.
Just how well did this return to a galaxy far, far, away do? Well, J.J. Abrams’ sequel generated an estimated $238 million in North America over the weekend, which helped contribute to a worldwide total that currently sits at $517 million. Those numbers are absolutely massive, and far above what anyone could have predicted.
If The Force Awakens continues at this rate, and there’s no reason to expect that it won’t, it could become the highest grossing film of all-time. That record currently belongs to James Cameron’s Avatar, which has a whopping $2.7 billion under its belt.
Of course, The Force Awakens still has a long road ahead of it if it’s to dethrone Cameron’s behemoth, but with outstanding reviews and very positive word of mouth, plus the fact that Star Wars fanboys are going to be seeing this film multiple times, it could very well get there.
We’ll continue to keep you posted on all the records that Disney’s blockbuster is going to break, but for now, tell us, do you think Star Wars: The Force Awakens has a shot at taking down Avatar? Sound off below and let us know!
