Some Very Interesting Star Wars: The Force Awakens Cameos Revealed

Well, perhaps cameo is the wrong word, since these famous faces didn’t actually appear in the movie, it was only their voices.

Regardless, if you’ve seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens you’ll no doubt recall the scene in which the force reaches out to Rey and guides her to a chest containing Luke Skywalker’s old lightsaber. When she touches it, she receives a vision of the past, and several different voices can be heard throughout it – voices that should have been very familiar to fans, because they were none other than Ewan McGregor, Frank Oz and Alec Guinness (previously recorded, obviously) reciting dialogue from their characters, Obi Wan Kenobi and Yoda, respectively.

During an interview with EW, director J.J. Abrams explained why he chose to include this, and what exactly was being said during the scene:

The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could. You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ‘Nooo!’ from that moment in Empire. And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey… these are your first steps.”

Does this mean one or both of these classic characters will return in a future movie to offer guidance to the young Jedi as a force-ghost? Personally, I don’t think they’ll want to revisit that particular element of the original trilogy, but I wouldn’t rule out a clearer, more intense vision for Rey at some point down the line.
