In celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original film, About.com has released a trio of new images for Kindergarten Cop 2, which find Dolph Lundgren in the title role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger all those years ago.
Releasing straight to home video, Universal 1440 Entertainment’s long-rumored sequel dumps Lundgren in the thick of it as Agent Reed, a musclebound operative who must pose as a kindergarten teacher in order to accrue information deemed vital to his mission. It is, essentially, the same set-up as the beloved original, though the studio has teased a few surprises still to come. Starring opposite Lundgren in the feature is Bill Bellamy (Any Given Sunday, TV’s Hot in Cleveland).
Behind the lens is Don Michael Paul, who has become something of a cult sequel expert following Jarhead 2 and Tremors 5, and will be hoping that the fish out of water dynamic is able to capture lightning in a bottle for a second time. In tandem with the release of today’s new images, here’s how About.com pitched Michael Paul’s follow-up.
“In Kindergarten Cop 2, Lundgren plays Agent Reed. Like in the original movie, Reed goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher, this time to recover a flash drive with sensitive information that was stolen from the Witness Protection Program. However, in addition to dealing with a handful of students, Reed also faces problems with the school’s “politically correct environment.”
Glenn Ross of Universal 1440 then added the following:
“Kindergarten Cop grossed over $200 million worldwide and has been entertaining audiences of all ages. In this exciting reboot, we introduce a unique blend of humor and action to the next generation of viewers, as well as share a reimagined version of the story with longtime fans who have made this an enduring family favorite.”
Kindergarten Cop 2 will find its toys and bring them back to the carpet in time for a Blu-ray and DVD release at some point in 2016.
