Awards season is fast approaching, folks, and with the Golden Globes a little over two weeks away, there has been hushed talk of which films will receive the nod ahead of the all-important 88th Academy Awards ceremony.

To give cinephiles a fleeting teaser, the Academy has rolled out the shortlist for the Visual Effects (VFX) gong, which encompasses some of the more awe-inspiring work to grace the silver screen this year, with everything from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s icy thriller The Revenant to George Miller’s fist-pumping Mad Max: Fury Road, and Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World to Star Wars: The Force Awakens each getting the nod.

Here’s the comprehensive shortlist courtesy of the Academy.

Ant-Man
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ex Machina
Jurassic World
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Tomorrowland
The Walk

From today, members of the judging panel will view a ten-minute sizzle reel from each of the films listed, before compiling a final pool of five films on Saturday, January 9. It’s this ultimate group that will receive a nomination for the coveted award.

Shortly thereafter, the Academy will nail down all nominations in the major categories in time for Thursday, January 14, and it’s here that we’ll find out the final collection of candidates. And ultimately, Chris Rock will take to the stage to host the 88th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 28. Will Star Wars: The Force Awakens be among the final five? Time will tell.
