The American Frontier Takes Center Stage In Chilling Featurette For The Revenant

Throughout the course of its prolonged development, much digital ink has been spilled about the trials and tribulations Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel) faced while filming The Revenant. Opting to shoot the revenge thriller in chronological order in a way that shunned studio lighting, the director's near-unprecedented commitment to realism is something that will no doubt feature on the film's eventual Blu-ray release but until then, we have a new featurette for Iñárritu's latest to tide us over.

Thrusting Leonardo DiCaprio into the thick of it as Hugo Glass, The Revenant takes cues from a real-life event where one man was left for dead after being betrayed by those he used to consider allies. One vicious mauling at the claws of a bear later and Glass is seen rising from the dead, setting off on a harrowing mission to avenge the death of his son.

Also starring Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, today’s behind-the-scenes footage sheds some light on the core themes fuelling DiCaprio’s thirst for revenge, along with the inhospitable environments that the actors braved throughout production.

Expect The Revenant to shoot for Oscar glory – with everyone from DiCaprio to cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki in contention for a nomination – when Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s feature opens on Christmas Day.
