That’s not to say that the latest outing was bad so much as that it didn’t compare to the previous seasons, though the network will be hoping to get the show firmly back on track with next year’s season 4. And while we’re still a ways away from its debut – April 2016, to be exact – BBC America unveiled the cryptic first trailer for Orphan Black‘s return during the festive period.

Welcoming back the award-winning Tatiana Maslany in the title role, today’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it teaser doesn’t divulge much in terms of plot, but the official logline for the upcoming season does shed some light on what to expect in the next chapter of Sarah’s story.

Sarah, reluctantly return home from her Icelandic hideout to track down an elusive and mysterious ally tied to the clone who started it all — Beth Childs. Sarah will follow Beth’s footsteps into a dangerous relationship with a potent new enemy, heading in a horrifying new direction. Under constant pressure to protect the sisterhood and keep everyone safe, Sarah’s old habits begin to resurface. As the close-knit sisters are pulled in disparate directions, Sarah finds herself estranged from the loving relationships that changed her for the better.

Promising answers to longstanding questions of the origins of the cloning program, there’s a crackle of excitement surrounding Orphan Black season 4, and not just because we get to see more of Maslany’s literally multi-faceted role headlining the drama.

Tatiana Maslany reprises her career-defining role as Sarah and her countless clones when Orphan Black returns to BBC America in April 2016.
