A certain Merc with a Mouth may be stealing the spotlight over at Empire, but there’s also room for Justin Kurzel’s upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed movie, with today’s pair of stills showcasing a battle-worn Michael Fassbender leaping into action.

On the heels of yesterday’s brooding image, which sent both Fassbender and co-star Ariane Labed back to the Middle Ages, the latest update offers an inkling of the narrative driving Kurzel’s much-anticipated rendition of Ubisoft’s clandestine series.

First up, we have a screenshot of Fassbender as Callum Lynch, imprisoned and seemingly at the mercy of the Templars, who put him through rigorous trials to relive the memories of his ancestors via a high-tech device known as the Animus. It’s a technology that unlocks memory blocks ingrained in Lynch’s DNA, catapulting him back to the thick of 15th century Spain.

From a confined cell to the open battlefield, Empire’s second teaser will be a familiar sight to those who glimpsed Fassbender in action as the doomed king in Kurzel’s recent and gripping treatment of Macbeth. Completing the Shakespearian reunion is Marion Cotillard, while Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson fill out the remainder of Assassin’s Creed‘s cast.

Assassin’s Creed will swan dive into theaters on December 21, 2016, and we should be able to look forward to the first trailer debuting alongside Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in March.

Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.
