Bran Stark actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright was recently quizzed about the time-hopping narrative driving Game of Thrones season 6, to which he compared the upcoming stint of episodes to Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

Much like George R.R. Martin’s novel A Feast for Crows, Bran and his tight-knight posse were conspicuously absent all throughout season 5, and were last seen north of the Wall on the hunt for Max von Sydow’s Three-Eyed Raven. Harnessing his innate ability to glimpse both the past and the future, Hempstead-Wright revealed to Entertainment Weekly how Game of Thrones season 6 will mark a defining turning point for Bran Stark as a character, who will become much more instrumental in the grand war than seasons gone by.

Firstly, the young actor acknowledged the decision to omit his storyline from the season 5 running, before teasing that some of his scenes that will go on to feature in next year’s season 6 are some of the best for Bran and his supernatural abilities.

“When I first heard the news Dan and David wanted to have a chat with me, I was like, ‘Oh no!’” recalls Hempstead-Wright, who has grown to nearly six feet and cut his hair much shorter since we last saw him completing his journey north to meet the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven. “Usually that’s to tell you [your character is] dead. So comparatively, missing a season was like, ‘phew!’”

“Oh! That’s the best scene I’ve ever done! … Oh! That scene is even better! Previously Bran’s seen tiny glimpses of future or past but never has he been very much in control in the situation,” he says. “Now we’re given looks into very important events in the past, present and future of this world and Bran is beginning to piece them together like a detective, almost as if he’s watching the show. Equally, he’s now discovering how crucial he could be in the Great War. It’s quite Inception-y.”

Game of Thrones season 6 will premiere on HBO at some point in early April.
