Last September, Michael Bay took to Twitter to make it clear that despite reports stating that he would direct a fifth instalment of the Transformers franchise, he had not yet agreed to take the helm of the movie. It was surprising to see the filmmaker publicly distance himself from the franchise when they’ve all been such huge hits, but no one could have really blamed Bay for walking away after directing four of the CGI heavy blockbusters.

Now, talking in a recent interview to promote the release of the much smaller in scale 13 Hours: The Secret Solders of Benghazi, the director confirmed that he will indeed be back for part five.

“Transformers, I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.”

When the interviewer reminded Bay that he said the exact same thing before the release of the last two Transformers movies, he acknowledged the fact that he’s repeating himself, but made his desire to move on after this one clear.

While critics and hardcore fans of the franchise have never really embraced his take on Transformers, there’s no denying the fact that moviegoers love them, and with Paramount no doubt offering Bay a huge amount of money to helm what should be yet another $1 billion plus hit for them, why would he say no?
