J.J. Abrams On The Mystery Of Rey’s Parentage In Star Wars: The Force Awakens

One of the biggest mysterious to be left unresolved by the closing scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the identity of Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents. This definitely seems to be important: after all she was left alone on Jakku for a very specific reason, and is incredibly proficient in the ways of the Force - so surely at least one of her parents will turn out to be a Jedi character we're already familiar with... right?

One of the biggest mysterious to be left unresolved by the closing scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the identity of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parents. It’s definitely something that seems important, too. After all, she was left alone on Jakku for a very specific reason, and is incredibly proficient in the ways of the Force – so surely at least one of her parents will turn out to be a Jedi character we’re already familiar with… right?

That’s definitely the prevailing theory. However, some fans also feel this could be a red herring, and though her origins are certianly important, her folks could just turn out to be a couple of regular schmoes who couldn’t look after her and left her on the desert planet. Whatever the case may be, director J.J. Abrams knows the truth, but he’s hardly going to come out and blab the details.

That didn’t stop him from being quizzed about it at today’s TCA panel, though. One reporter asked outright of Rey was related to Obi Wan Kenobi, and here’s what the director said:

I know quite a bit, but obviously it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian [Johnson]’s story to continue now,” Abrams responded. “The last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy he showed me.
