It’s still kind of hard to believe that Wonder Woman is actually happening, but with shooting underway and a 2017 release date officially set, the Amazonian warrior is finally about to get the big screen treatment she deserves. While we’ll first meet Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, her solo outing features a great supporting cast, including Star Trek‘s Chris Pine as love interest/sidekick Steve Trevor.
Not an awful lot is known about his take on the character (who in the current DC Comics Universe met Wonder Woman in the present day and works for A.R.G.U.S.), but Pine has now shed some light on what we should expect:
“Steve Trevor is a rogue-ish, cynical realist who’s seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization. He’s a worldly guy, a charming guy and it’s going to be a great, fun film. There are some incredibly deep, interesting and morally relevant themes. Patty [Jenkins] is just directing the daylights out of it. It’s shot beautifully feels so wonderfully period, but also has this wonderful pop sensibility.”
As for the unique World War I setting, Pine sounds very enthusiastic about getting to explore something new.
“[It’s] a period we don’t see often; it’s usually World War II. Our costume design is incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I’d never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here. It highlights a really important point. When background casting is done well, it can make or break a scene. I’ve got people in deep background that have entire lives. It’s awesome, it’s actual make-believe land.”
Photos from the set of Wonder Woman have confirmed that Pine’s comments are accurate, and Jenkins has clearly put a lot into making the setting feel as authentic as possible. Whether rumours about us spending time in the present day are accurate remains to be seen, but Pine is definitely a solid addition to the DC Extended Universe and someone Marvel’s Kevin Feige no doubt regrets missing out on.
