New commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther movie may prevent director Ryan Coogler from returning to the Creed franchise for a second round. Although Coogler neither confirmed nor denied his directorial involvement in the so-called Creed 2, in an interview with Yahoo he mentioned a potential for the studio to fast track the film due to the booming critical success of the original, which would interfere with Black Panther.
“We’ll see,” Coogler told Yahoo Movies, “It all depends on how fast the studio and Irwin [Winkler – producer] are trying to move. If they wanna move fast, and it’s likely they will, my involvement would be more limited than it was on ‘Creed’.”
The current plans for Creed 2 put the film in a November 2017 release window, which would assuredly clash with the current slated date for Marvel’s Black Panther on February 16, 2018. Still, Coogler will probably remain on with the Creed franchise in some capacity, most likely as a producer of some kind.
Sylvester Stallone has suggested potential ideas for Creed 2, one of which involves the film going back and forth in time, similar to The Godfather Part II, and showing Rocky and Apollo together. Coogler mentioned that such details about a sequel to Creed have been “kicked around,” ultimately noting that thanks to the deep characters and emotional storyline of the franchise, “there’s so many ways they could go, it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.”
