Those with even a passing interest in Norse mythology will know all of the dark and horrible events that Ragnarok connotes – and none of them are good. But with the addition of Mark Ruffalo’s hulking green rage monster, MCU newcomer Taika Waititi is keen to create a more comedic sequel with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok.
When quizzed about the general tone of his space-faring follow-up, the What We Do in the Shadows helmer noted that he is aligning his vision more with the first film, claiming that he plans to “take the second Thor film and add some jokes to that.”
[zerg]First picked up by The Wrap, Waititi’s off-hand remark was pulled from an interview with the outlet during this past weekend’s Sundance Film Festival, where he was in attendance to promote Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It’s by no means a comprehensive breakdown of Thor: Ragnarok, though Waititi’s quip does echo the views expressed by Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige, particularly when it comes to injecting a sense of fun back into the Chris Hemsworth-fronted series.
Plus, going off Ruffalo’s teases, Ragnarok will largely pull its more light-hearted moments from the relationship between Bruce Banner’s monstrous alter-ego and Hemsworth’s God of Thunder. In fact, the actor recently compared the dynamic to that found in your typical road movie.
“There’s a little bit of Midnight Run, with [Charles] Grodin and [Robert] De Niro,” Ruffalo told Empire. “I feel like that’s kind of where we’re heading with this relationship between Thor and Banner.” So is it a road movie? “It is a universal road movie – that’s where we’re heading,” he says, adding cryptically: “It’s not where you’d think it will be, so it’s not your classic road movie but it has that structure, I think.”
Thor: Ragnarok is currently slated for a release on November 3, 2017.
