Marvel and Adam McKay may have some issues to hash out yet before the writer-director is brought aboard 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, though that hasn’t quelled McKay’s excitement about the future of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly’s diminutive heroes in the MCU.

While we’re still a ways away before seeing the pair back on screen together – Rudd’s Scott Lang will be a part of the Civil War ensemble, mind you – director Peyton Reed has already been dreaming up where to take Ant-Man next, and it’s about as weird and unique as you’d expect.

While doing the press rounds for his Oscar hopeful The Big Short, McKay entertained the idea of Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne getting her own spinoff movie. In short? It’s possible, according to the scribe.

Per IGN:

“Possibly. I think it all depends on this sequel and how the character plays. Certainly there’s a lot of female superheroes in the Marvel universe so I’m sure you’re going to see them start to spread out. They sort of started with their kind of bedrock characters from the 60’s and the 70’s and I think you saw more of an explosion of female characters happening in the 80’s and then the 90’s. X-Men obviously has great female characters, but that’d be interesting, a Wasp movie. I don’t know, that’d be very interesting. I always think of the two of them as kind of together – they always were in the comics – but why not. Sure.”

While DC and Warner Bros. has made significant ground with Gal Gadot’s depiction of Wonder Woman, introducing her in this year’s Dawn of Justice before spinning out a standalone for Patty Jenkins’ 2017 Wonder Woman movie, Marvel is seriously lagging behind in the female superhero department. Despite mooted reports of MMA star Ronda Rousey nabbing the title role, all is still quiet on the Captain Marvel front, and we imagine that the studio is focusing attention on the latter before any talk of a spinoff for The Wasp is brought into consideration.

Marvel may have slated three untitled movies for a release in 2020, though Evangeline Lilly will next take on the role of Hope van Dyne once again when Ant-Man and the Wasp makes a beeline for theaters on July 6, 2018.
