It cannot be denied that writer-producer Beau Willimon played an integral part in the stratospheric rise enjoyed by Netflix over the past few years. With his award-winning episodic adaptation of House Of Cards that debuted in 2013, Willimon was at the forefront of the streaming platform’s upgrade, from primarily a film and television library, to powerhouse producer of high quality programming. Now, however, after the delivery of four dramatic seasons, Willimon is moving on.
With the 13 episode fourth season due to arrive in its entirety on March 4th 2016, producers Netflix and MRC announced the showrunner’s departure.
“Netflix and MRC owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Beau Willimon for his strong narrative vision for House of Cards over the show’s first four seasons. As an Academy Award nominated writer, he made his first foray into television and built a riveting and critically acclaimed series, establishing his place in TV history. The producers, cast and crew join us in wishing Beau the best in his next creative adventure.”
For his part, Willimon expressed pride in all he has achieved with the series.
“I’m grateful to Netflix and MRC, my fellow executive producers, our two incandescent stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, our talented writers, as well as the incredible cast and crew with whom I’ve had the privilege to work. After five years and four seasons, it’s time for me to move on to new endeavors, but I’m supremely proud of what we’ve built together, wish the show much continued success, and leave it in the hands of a very capable team.”
In announcing the shake-up, Netflix also confirmed the renewal of House Of Cards for a fifth season – due to be delivered on the streaming platform in 2017. With the departure of showrunner Beau Willimon, we should expect to hear the announcement of his replacement soon – possibly followed by further shake-ups to the drama, as the incoming leader seeks to make their mark.
