Set for a limited release on Friday, February 5, today brings forth the latest trailer for the drama, exploring the fraught relationship between Ethan Hawke’s detective and Emma Watson’s Angela. Amenábar’s feature largely centers on the latter star, who has become completely reclusive after blaming her father (David Dencik) of a heinous crime.

Situated in Minnesota circa 1990, today’s trailer doesn’t necessarily trumpet the director’s thriller as a must-see, and bearing in mind that the production company has limited Regression‘s theatrical opening to a measly one hundred screens in the States, we’re struggling to see Amenábar’s feature making much of a dent in this weekend’s box office standings. And that’s all the more disappointing given how it looks to have squandered a stellar cast.

One thing’s for sure, The Weinstein Company will be holding out hope that Regression can avoid the box office pitfalls of Jane Got a Gun, which unequivocally tanked during its opening weekend to become the studio’s worst wide release opening ever. The former opens this Friday.

Minnesota, 1990. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates the case of young Angela (Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray (David Dencik), of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits guilt, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories and what they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery.
