Anger. Denial. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. Relief? In the latest trailer for Jean-Marc Vallee’s (Dallas Buyers Club) soon-to-be-released Demolition, Jake Gyllenhaal’s investment banker, largely unfazed by the sudden death of his doting wife, begins to unravel like one complex piece of origami, and the result is a drama you daren’t take your eye off.

Playing the part of Davis, Gyllenhaal’s protagonist is a wonderful fusion of bemusement and frank honesty, even in the face of a personal crisis. Seeking an outlet for his grief – even if he isn’t aware of it – Davis makes a mountain out of a mole hill when he decides to pen complaints to a vending machine company over a broken machine, catching the attention of Naomi Watts’ customer service rep, Karen.

Beginning to get a better handle on his fracturted life, the introduction of Watts’ character and her rebellious son (Judah Lewis) offers Davis a new lease of life. Lending the film its evocative name, Gyllenhaal’s lead then sets about breaking down the life he once knew brick by brick – a method he deems to be the only logical way to rebuild anew.

Following an eye-catching premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Demolition will make its theatrical bow on April 8. Chris Cooper and Heather Lind complete the cast.

In DEMOLITION, a successful investment banker, Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father-in-law (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two strangers form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
