Starring opposite Sam Rockwell for the light-hearted feature, the Pitch Perfect star plays Martha, a young woman out of luck and out of love who begins to question whether she’ll ever cross paths with Mr. Right. Low and behold, Rockwell’s smooth-talking assassin walks into her life, but after bumping off a nameless hitman on their first date, his character of Francis is left dealing with a bounty on his head, effectively drawing in Kendrick’s hopeless romantic in the process.

Placing Penny Dreadful director Paco Cabezas behind the lens, Mr. Right looks set to be a bright and breezy romp. Our own Sam Woolf was somewhat underwhelmed coming out of TIFF 2015, but it’ll be interesting to see whether Kendrick and Rockwell’s chemistry can hold up in the final feature, even with the 17-year age gap.

Mr. Right shoots for a limited theatrical and VOD release on April 8, and you can get a sneak peek at the pair’s on-screen chemistry via the maiden trailer above.

Mr-Right

Hyperactive at the best of times, Martha (Kendrick) has gone full-on manic since her latest breakup. She babbles, parties like a monster, cooks everything in sight – and is looking to do something terrible when she meets Francis (Rockwell). To anyone else, Francis’s approach would come across as creepy, but Martha can’t help but be intrigued. They seem a perfect match: she’s bananas, he’s bananas… except he’s a deadly sort of bananas. He’s a professional assassin. Francis is a hitman with a cause: he unexpectedly kills the people ordering the hits. Just as Martha begins to realize her new beau wasn’t joking when he said he had to step out for a moment to shoot someone, things start heating up for Francis.
