Setting aside the civil wars both in Marvel and DC’s respective camps, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange is arguably the most intriguing superhero flick of 2016.

Marking the first tangible extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to dabble with mysticism and the supernatural, there’s a buzz of excitement surrounding the November release, and recently Chiwetel Ejiofor – who assumes the role of Baron Mordo – touched base on why the Sorcerer Supreme is so interesting in the first place.

Preparing for “something unique,” the Triple 9 actor spoke with HeyUGuys about how the film is shaping up, and why Derrickson’s origins tale is ready to bring a new visual style to the MCU.

“I think he’s a fascinating character. Even in the original framework of that character, I think he’s very fascinating. And fleshing that out and giving three-dimensional quality has been really exciting. And even within the kind of scope, technical and visual scale of the Marvel Universe, I think this is really something unique as well. So, I’m excited for people to see it.”

Further in the piece, Ejiofor was quizzed about the diversity in the studio’s sprawling universe, who pointed to Black Panther as a welcome sign of expanding the slate, both in terms of people and the stories they tell.

“Marvel is certainly introducing a lot of different characters, and diversity in characters. And getting Black Panther up and running is really great and really exciting. And the more that can happen, and we get as audience to experience different stories and different people, I think it’s very rich world.”

Also starring Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, and Michael Stuhlbarg, Doctor Strange opens on November 4.
